House Democrats’ Decision to Keep Pelosi as Leader Indicates Her Caucus’ Leftward Drift Will Continue

  • Despite Nancy Pelosi’s failure to bring them back to the House majority, House Democrats decided to keep her as their leader.

  • The House Democrats’ decision to let Pelosi remain as the Democrat leader is the latest sign that the Democrat caucus has become increasingly liberal. The defeat of ostensibly “moderate” Blue Dogs has paved the way for more vocally left-wing Democrats to rise.

  • The leftward drift of Pelosi’s caucus is set to continue for the next two years. After ramming through ObamaCare and a failed trillion dollar stimulus, the Democrats apparently aren’t done yet.

Despite Nancy Pelosi’s failure to bring them back to the House majority, House Democrats decided to keep her as their leader:

“PELOSI TO RUN AGAIN FOR DEMOCRATIC LEADER”:(“Pelosi to Run Again for Democratic Leader,” CNN, 11/14/2012)

DEMOCRATS FELL “SIGNIFICANTLY SHORT IN THEIR ‘DRIVE FOR 25’ SEATS TO TAKE BACK THE HOUSE MAJORITY”: “Some believe that Pelosi, who just celebrated her 25 anniversary in Congress, representing San Francisco, will use Tuesday’s press conference to make a case for remaining leader, despite Democrats falling significantly short in their Drive for 25 seats to take back the House majority they lost with a net drop of 63 seats in 2010.” (Billy House, “Press Conference Likely to be Overshadowed by Pelosi Questions,” National Journal, 11/12/2012)

The House Democrats’ decision to let Pelosi remain as the Democrat leader is the latest sign that the Democrat caucus has become increasingly liberal. The defeat of ostensibly “moderate” Blue Dogs has paved the way for more vocally left-wing Democrats to rise:

“TUESDAY’S RESULTS MADE THE SHRINKING COALITION OF MODERATE DEMOCRATS IN THE HOUSE EVEN SMALLER”: (Fredreka Schouten, “House Likely to Stay in Republican Hands,” USA Today, 11/6/2012)

2010 WAS A “BLUE DOG WIPEOUT: HALF OF CAUCUS GONE”:(Glenn Thrush, “Blue Dog Wipeout: Half of Caucus Gone,” Politico, 11/3/2010)

PELOSI HAS A “STRONG GRIP” ON “SIZEABLE LIBERAL WING” OF DEMOCRAT CAUCUS: “A powerful and prolific fundraiser, Pelosi has a strong grip on her caucus, in particular its sizable liberal wing.” (Brian Montopoli, “Pelosi to Stay on as Minority Leader,” CBS News, 11/14/2012)

“NANCY PELOSI URGED TO STAY BY PROGRESSIVES IN LAST-MINUTE BID”: (Ryan Grim, “Nancy Pelosi Urged to Stay by Progressives in Last-Minute Bid,” The Huffington Post, 11/14/2012)

“THE MOST LIBERAL HOUSE SPEAKER IN CONGRESSIONAL HISTORY”: “Pelosi’s base of grassroots progressives and what she calls ‘idealistic money’ — wealthy liberals who give to the party, rather than to boost business interests — allowed her to be the most liberal House speaker in congressional history.”(Ryan Grim, “Nancy Pelosi Urged to Stay by Progressives in Last-Minute Bid,” The Huffington Post, 11/14/2012)

The leftward drift of Pelosi’s caucus is set to continue for the next two years. After ramming through ObamaCare and a failed trillion dollar stimulus, the Democrats apparently aren’t done yet:

MARCH 21, 2010: DEMS RAM THROUGH OBAMACARE ON 219-212 VOTE WITH ZERO REPUBLICAN VOTES: (Roll Call Vote 165, Clerk of the U.S. House, 3/21/2010)
