ABC News: Closing White House To Public Doesn’t Even Save $20,000

March 7, 2013

The White House has really struck a chord by canceling free public White House tours—allegedly due to President Obama’s sequester. Many parts of the country are outraged by closing the people’s house.

A report by ABC News’ Jon Karl last night showed that the move only saves approximately $18,000 a week. That’s right. The White House canceled tours to the public to save the same amount per week that it takes to buy a KIA.

The National Review Online’s Jim Geraghty reported this morning that it cost President Obama slightly less to host the President of Mexico for a State Dinner than it does to run the tours for a whole year.

What’s even more galling is the that The Daily Caller reports that the Director of the White House Visitors Office received $30,000 in raises throughout President Obama’s first term. The director’s salary went from $70,000 in 2009 to $100,000 in 2012. The amount in raises would have raised just shy of the amount it takes to run the tours for two weeks.

The NRCC is out this morning talking about this exact problem. President Obama wants to make spending cuts something to be feared by Americans. That is why he and his administration are purposefully making the cuts as painful as possible to as many people as possible.

American families have had to reduce their budgets and responsibly move money around to make sure certain important expenses are covered. Why should the White House be any different?
