This One Poll Number Is Scaring House Democrats Today

April 7, 2014

A new AP-GfK poll released over the weekend contained some bad news for House Democrats still hoping for a chance to make Nancy Pelosi the Speaker of the House again.

According to the poll, Republicans hold a 14-point edge over Democrats when those who are “strongly interested” in the midterm election are asked which party they’d prefer control Congress. While 51% say they want a Republican-controlled Congress, just 37% say they want Pelosi back in charge.

Even worse for Democrats: in January, that Democrats were only down 3-points in this group.

This new number – which should send vulnerable House Democrats packing – comes on the heels of another poll that found 70% of Republicans saying they are excited to vote this year, compared to just 58% of Democrats.

It’s clear that President Obama’s failing agenda, the abysmal economy, and the ObamaCare train wreck are causing serious problems for vulnerable House Democrats. But how much longer can they hold on?

From the Washington Post:

The number is 14.  That’s the percentage point difference between those who say they favor a Republican-controlled Congress (51 percent) and those who want  Democratic-controlled one, among people who say they are strongly interested in politics. (Among the broader electorate, the Republican lead is far less consequential on this so-called “generic ballot” question with 37 percent choosing a GOP-controlled Congress while 36 percent opt for a Democratic one.)  According to AP’s Jennifer Agiesta “in January, this group was about evenly split, with 42 percent preferring Democrats and 45 percent the Republicans.”

Guess who votes in midterms — and particularly the second midterm of a president’s tenure? Yup — people who are “strongly interested” in politics.  And therein lies the Democrats’ problem.
