Scott Peters Dodges on Congressional Perks

February 24, 2015

At a town hall last week, Scott Peters was asked about the many perks available to members of Congress and whether or not taxpayer dollars should continue to fund them despite our huge deficits. Peters’ response was baffling:

I’m not sure quite what you’re talking about in terms of perks.”Peters Gym

In her question, the audience member specifically mentions gym memberships, a well-known Congressional perk, yet Peters played dumb.

Unfortunately for Peters, he has continually cited his use of the Congressional Gym in an attempt to burnish his bipartisan credentials.

In fact, Peters even participated in a TODAY segment on his frequent use of the gym (2:23 mark), again trying to trumpet his bipartisanship.

If Scott Peters is willing to talk to NBC about using the Congressional Gym, why isn’t he willing to talk to his constituents about it? Perhaps Peters is afraid the talk of perks will remind voters that he charged San Diego taxpayers nearly $70,000 on a BMW while on the city council. Or maybe he’s worried that voters will remember that Peters opted to take his generous taxpayer funded pension early, despite his enormous personal wealth. Regardless of what Scott Peters is trying to hide, San Diego voters deserve better.

NRCC Comment: “Scott Peters needs to be honest about the perks he receives as a Congressman. If Peters won’t be transparent with San Diego families about something as simple as a gym membership, how can voters trust him to be straightforward on the tough issues?” – NRCC Spokesman Zach Hunter
