Rick Nolan’s War on Steel

March 31, 2015

Today, Rick Nolan set the standard for political doublespeak when he published an op-ed trumpeting his “support” of US steel manufacturers while just last week voting for a carbon tax that would devastate the steel industry.steel worker

“Make no mistake – we intend to fight for our workers.”

Nolan needs to explain to these very workers how he plans to fight for them while at the same time voting to hit their employers with a painful new tax.

In fact, a recent study stated that a widespread carbon tax could reduce steel “production significantly, by an estimated –9%.” It is doubtful that many of the steel workers in Nolan’s district believe a drop in steel production would help their employment prospects.

Nolan can talk about supporting steel all he wants, but his votes in Washington show Nolan has joined with extreme environmentalists in their war on steel manufacturers and workers.

NRCC Comment: “Rick Nolan can’t have his cake and eat it too. With his support of extreme environmental policies that will devastate the steel industry and send jobs overseas, Rick Nolan has declared a war on steel producers and workers.” – NRCC Spokesman Zach Hunter
