A question for DFL candidates in MN-02

April 28, 2015

As the DFL primary in Minnesota’s 2nd District gets underway, Mary Lawrence and Angie Craig have yet to answer a key question:

Where do the DFL candidates stand on Trade Promotion Authority to allow President Obama to negotiate the Trans-Pacific Partnership?TPA

Democrats around the country have been badly divided on the issue, with the liberal Elizabeth Warren wing of the party staunchly opposing the legislation. However, President Obama went so far as to say Warren was “wrong” in her assessment of the deal, dividing the Democratic Party even further.

In fact, the issue is becoming a key litmus test for Democrats running in 2016, including Hillary Clinton, who has walked back her strong support of the deal, but has yet to stake out a firm position.

As both Mary Lawrence and Angie Craig vie for the DFL endorsement, Trade Promotion Authority is sure to be a key issue in their debate. Will either Craig or Lawrence take a stand on the TPA or will they avoid talking about substantive policy issues until forced by activists or the press?
