Scott Peters Wants to Bring Terrorists to America

May 18, 2016

As House Republicans move to pass the National Defensive Authorization Act (NDAA) and secure the necessary funding for resources needed by our military, Scott Peters has voted to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay (GITMO) and bring the dangerous terrorists currently detained there to U.S. soil.

Peters voted in favor of an amendment to the NDAA offered by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) that would strike prohibitions on the closure of GITMO contained within the underlying bill. While House Republicans continue to fight for the safety of American citizens, Scott Peters and House Democrats are tirelessly working to dismantle our national security.

“While our national security is under a constant threat from global terrorism, Scott Peters has voted in favor of closing GITMO and bringing the very terrorists who threaten our security onto U.S. soil,” said NRCC Communications Director Katie Martin. “Instead of fighting to strengthen our national security and keep dangerous terrorists far from California families, Scott Peters has voted against the safety of his constituents, instead working to help President Obama complete his dangerous mission to close GITMO.”

The NDAA is critical in ensuring that the men and women of our military and their families receive the funding they have rightfully earned. It also includes a provision to prevent the president from closing U.S. facilities at Guantanamo Bay and transferring detainees to U.S. prisons. The Obama administration is currently considering facilities at Fort Leavenworth in Leavenworth, Kansas; Naval Consolidated Brigs in Charleston, South Carolina, Chesapeake, Virginia, and Miramar, California; the Northwest Regional Correctional Facility at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma, Washington; and the federal Bureau of Prisons complex in Florence, Colorado.
