Chris Pappas plays politics with domestic violence

February 14, 2019

House Democrats are spending their Valentine’s Day refusing to support an extension of the Violence Against Women Act before it expires in just over 24 hours.

The band of extremists insist on having a standalone bill instead, but there is one slight problem: NO HOUSE DEMOCRAT HAS INTRODUCED A STANDALONE BILL.

Think about that — Democrats are refusing to extend a bipartisan program expiring in 24 hours because they instead want to force a vote on a standalone bill they haven’t even introduced.

NRCC Comment: “Democrats politicizing victims of domestic violence is politics at its worst.   The fact that Chris Pappas is standing idle as his party calls for a vote on a bill they haven’t introduced for a program expiring in 24 hours tells you all you need to know about how radicalized the Democratic Party has become.” – NRCC Spokesman Michael McAdams

*Here’s a selection of what Democrats, including Pappas, had to say in the past about allowing VAWA to lapse:

Rep. Chris Pappas: The effect on domestic and sexual violence survivors is a powerful reminder of what is at stake. Without crisis center funding, victims will be left with fewer places to turn in their time of great need. Survivors should not have to wait another day for a sense of safety and security. We must recognize the importance of these programs and how many people will be adversely impacted if President Trump and Republican Senate leaders do not agree to end this senseless political fight and reopen the government.

Leader Steny Hoyer: #VAWA is set to expire on September 30. I urge Republicans to bring this legislation to the Floor and to not play partisan games with the Violence Against Women Act, as they did with the last reauthorization.

Rep. Joe Kennedy III: GOP & @realDonaldTrump aren’t only shutting down the government tonight, they’re allowing the Violence Against Women Act to expire and leaving survivors of domestic violence & sexual assault without critical, lifesaving resources. Shameful.

Rep. Gerry Connolly: What shouldn’t be lost in Trump’s shutdown is House Republicans are allowing the Violence Against Women Act to expire. A shameful end to Speaker Ryan’s tenure.

Rep. Yvette Clark: Congress has a moral responsibility to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, which has substantially reduced domestic violence, sexual assault, and dating violence since its enactment by a bipartisan supermajority in 1994

Sen. Kamala Harris: Don’t let this go unnoticed: the Violence Against Women Act, which helps survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault, expired with the government shutdown. It’s deeply concerning.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren: The Violence Against Women Act ― which supports critical programs to help victims of sexual assault, domestic abuse, and stalking ― expired at midnight. We could have funded it, but @realDonaldTrump would rather shut down the government for a wall that doesn’t make us any safer.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand: There is simply no room for partisan gamesmanship when we’re talking about the safety of our families. For millions of women and families, VAWA serves as a lifeline to keep them safe. Congress must finally provide victims of domestic and sexual violence with the protections and treatment they deserve.

Sen. Cory “Spartacus” Booker: This is deeply concerning—the Violence Against Women Act, which provides critical resources for survivors of domestic violence & sexual assault, expired with the government shutdown. This #TrumpShutdown must end
