TRANSPARENCY?! A few questions for tax delinquent Melissa Gilbert

September 14, 2015

Tax delinquent Melissa Gilbert’s campaign admitted on Friday that Gilbert’s first-ever fundraiser for her MI-08 congressional campaign was held out-of-state in California.  In admitting this, Gilbert’s campaign said, “we’re not hiding anything from voters.”  Does this mean they will provide the details surrounding the $360,000 Gilbert owes to the IRS and her $112,000 tax lien in California?

A few questions:

  • Will Gilbert disclose all of her assets and sources of revenue for the years she didn’t pay her taxes?
  • Gilbert currently has an 5 year repayment plan in place to pay $360,000 in back taxes to the IRS and a 46 month plan to pay $112,000 to California.  How much is Gilbert paying per month in delinquent taxes? Is she paying interest on what amounts to a taxpayer-backed government loan?
  • Does Melissa Gilbert think it is appropriate to be running for a federal office when she can’t even be bothered to pay her federal taxes to the tune of $360,000?

NRCC Comment:  “We look forward Melissa Gilbert disclosing the details surrounding the $470,000 she owes in back taxes since her campaign says they won’t hide anything from voters.  It’s hard to believe that someone who has enough assets to owe nearly half a million dollars in taxes can’t manage to pay them just like every day Michigan families are expected to do.” –NRCC Spokesman Chris Pack
