Matheson ducks Obama’s Sequester

February 25, 2013

With just four days until sequester cuts hit Utah, families in Utah’s 4th district might ask what their Congressman, Jim Matheson, has done to protect them. This can be answered in a word: nothing.

As documented by his Facebook page, Matheson used his congressional recess week to attend many events across Utah, however at no point did he address the devastating effects of sequestration on Utah families and what he plans to do to help avert this crisis. The Sequester is also absent from Matheson’s congressional website and his latest e-newsletter.

Now, as outlined by the White House’s state-by-state impact documents, Utah is slated to lose more than $6 million in funding for primary and secondary education and would see a slash in programs such as nutrition assistance for seniors and job search assistance for the unemployed. According to a Bloomberg Government study, Utah is also at risk to lose $50.2 million in defense contract spending.

After voting FOR the Sequester and AGAINST legislation that would have replaced it, it’s no wonder Matheson remains silent.

“Despite consuming national headlines for weeks and threatening devastating cuts to Utah families, Jim Matheson has blatantly ignored the looming Sequester in an effort to remain under the radar as those cuts take effect. Matheson should be held accountable for these disastrous consequences and offer solutions instead of waiting out the storm with his tail between his legs.” – NRCC Spokeswoman, Alleigh Marré
