WSJ: For Obama, Number One Priority Is Making Nancy Pelosi Speaker Again

March 5, 2013

We here at the NRCC have been saying it for months: we are the last line of the defense against the Obama-Pelosi agenda.

Remember when President Obama said this last month?

In case you didn’t believe us then, these last few days should change your mind.

On Saturday, The Washington Post wrote that President Obama is looking for “cement his legacy” by winning back in the House in 2014. Without the GOP getting in the way, they believe they will be able to implement more of President Obama’s liberal legislative strategy—hearkening back to his first two years in office.

As the story grew yesterday, television networks reported President Obama’s obsession with flipping the House and reinstalling Pelosi into power. Take a look at our compilation of the coverage here.

Finally today, the Wall Street Journal has an editorial out this morning talking about how President Obama and national Democrats are calculating everything they do so they can win back the House and push a liberal agenda of ‘gun control, immigration, climate change and the economy during [Obama’s] final two year in office.”

“The article says that shortly after finishing his speech on Election Night last year, Mr. Obama called Mrs. Pelosi and Steve Israel, who runs the Democratic House re-election campaign, to discuss 2014. The strategy fits Mr. Obama’s unprecedented new effort to raise $50 million in $500,000 chunks to fund Organizing for Action (OFA), which will spend millions in GOP-held districts. Mr. Israel says he met in January with Jim Messina, Mr. Obama’s 2012 campaign manager who now runs OFA, to discuss the 2014 races.”

“This is already clear on the budget, as Mr. Obama insists on a second tax increase that Republicans can’t accept. We’re also increasingly worried about White House sabotage on immigration reform, as it pushes the bill left on a guest-worker program and enforcement. Mr. Obama is doing exactly what you’d expect if he doesn’t want a deal and plans to use the issue to drive minority turnout in 2014.”

The last few lines are the true take away. President Obama and Nancy Pelosi don’t want “compromise” as they have repeatedly claimed. They simply want liberal wedge issues to run on in 2014 to help cement President Obama’s liberal legacy.

“The next time you hear Mr. Obama, House Democrats or one of their media acolytes talk about GOP “obstructionism,” refer them to the Washington Post article that shows what they really intend for the current Congress. Bipartisan failure is their strategy.”
