Carol Shea-Porter uses threat of sequester pain for political gain

March 25, 2013

Carol Shea-Porter doesn’t seem to get it. As she tours her district holding press conferences about the “sequester,” she either ignores or is ignorant of the following well established facts:

(1) The sequester was President Obama’s proposal (Woodward, Bob, Price of Politics, p. 326),

(2) The President refused to offer an alternative because he believed that he could use the pain of sequester for political gain against House Republicans (Thursh, Glenn, Obama’s Last Stand, p. 41),

Sequester

(3) The House of Representatives twice passed bills to cancel the sequester (H.R. 5652, Vote #247, Passed 218-199, 5/12/12; H.R. 6684, Vote #644, Passed 215-209, 12/20/12), and

(4) Carol Shea-Porter voted against the bipartisan continuing resolution which eased the effects of the sequester on defense and veterans (H.R. 933, Vote #62, Passed 267-151, 3/6/2013).

But Shea-Porter conveniently is leaving these facts out of her partisan dialogue.

“Carol Shea-Porter either ignores or is ignorant of the fact that House Republicans twice voted to cancel the sequester which President Obama both proposed and deliberately kept in place in order to score political points. Now Shea-Porter is following that same failed game plan as she tries to politically gain from fears of future sequester pain.” – NRCC Spokesman Ian Prior
