Bill Enyart Held Illinois Students and Families Hostage With High Student Loan Rates – UNACCEPTABLE

August 1, 2013

What an embarrassment.

For 70 days, Bill Enyart held college students hostage, just to continue his loyalty to Nancy Pelosi.

By blocking that measure, Enyart and his Democratic allies caused interest rates to spike on July 1 – putting college students in Illinois and across the country further into a state of financial uncertainty and stress. On May 23, Enyart voted AGAINST a plan similar to one backed by President Obama that would have kept student loan rates from doubling. (H.R. 1911, Vote #183, 221-198, 5/23/13)

Finally yesterday, Enyart was shamed into allowing that plan to go into effect – only after negatively impacting millions of students and families. (Roll Call #426, 7/31/2013)

NRCC Statement: “Bill Enyart should be embarrassed. For the past 70 days he’s held students and families hostage to the threat of higher student loan rates, and it’s unacceptable. Once again, he’s shown us that he’s willing to put Nancy Pelosi and her agenda above his constituents.” – NRCC Spokeswoman Danielle Varallo
