You Wont Believe What Happened to This Grandfather When He Tried to Sign up for Obamacare

October 1, 2013

Surprise, surprise. We’re less than 12 hours into the first day of ObamaCare signups for millions of Americans across the country, and there have already been numerous reports of glitch after glitch, frustrations, and disappointments.

The Washington Post featured the story of Jon Tucci, a 60 year old grandfather from West Virginia. Excited about the prospect of the exchanges, Tucci stayed up until Midnight in order to access the newly available website, and to enroll in West Virginia’s plans.

Well, things didn’t go exactly as planned.

Ten hours later — after two attempts at signing up and one 45-minutes call with a consumer service agent — technical glitches have prevented the 60-year-old grandfather from purchasing a plan.

“I’m pretty fluent on the Internet,” Tucci, who is self-employed in the oil and gas industry, says. “I’ve applied for a lot of things, and there are always glitches. But this was totally disappointing. I’m just really frustrated.”

And rightfully so. After months of talking up the law and all of its benefits, it’s unacceptable that millions of Americans are going to be stuck with slow web traffic, incoherent customer service calls, and multiple error messages.

Fail

So what now?

“I could hear her reading the instructions and trying to figure out what to do,” Tucci recounts. “As soon as she put me on hold, I heard the fascinating tone of a disconnect noise. I decided not to call her back, I had to get out to work.”

Tucci says he’ll probably try and sign up later Tuesday, if he has time when he gets home from work.
