5 Fumblers Who Can Sympathize With Barack Obama

November 14, 2013

Barack Obama loves his football analogies and he admits that he fumbled the rollout of ObamaCare. So we thought he’d appreciate these other memorable fumbles from the last 25 years (sorry college football fans, NFL only here). You’re not along Mr. President – Mark Sanchez knows exactly how you feel:

1. The Butt Fumble – In the third quarter of last Thanksgiving’s Jets-Patriots matchup, the Jets were trying to tie the game in the second quarter when Mark Sanchez ran into the backside of his offensive lineman and fumbled the ball, which was then picked up by Patriots safety Steven Gregory and turned into a defensive touchdown.

2.  Byner’s Goal Line Drop – With a chance to tie the 1987-88 AFC Championship game at 38 apiece with a minute left, Earnest Byner took the handoff and was headed into the end zone when he fumbled right before crossing the goal line. Denver held on to the win and advanced to the Super Bowl.

3. Roger Craig end chances for 49er’s 3-peat – In 1990, the San Fransisco 49ers were trying to become the first NFL team to win three Super Bowls in a row. Up 13-12 on the NY Giants with a little over two minutes to play, running back Roger Craig fumbled the ball. Lawrence Taylor recovered, and the Giants kicked a field goal to win the game and move on to Super Bowl XXV.

4Tony Romo’s botched hold – With a chance to win the 2006-07 Wild Card playoff matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, the Cowboys lined up for a 19-yard chip shot field goal. The ball was snapped to quarterback Tony Romo, who fumbled the snap and then was unable to reach the end zone on a scramble. Game over, Seattle 21-Dallas 20.

5. Kyle Williams hands the Giants a Super Bowl – again – What is it with the 49ers fumbling away Super Bowl appearances to the Giants? In overtime of the 2011-12 NFC Championship game, the Giants punted to 49ers returner Kyle Williams, who muffed the punt and gave the Giants the ball deep in 49er territory. The Giants then kicked a game winning field goal on their way to a fourth Super Bowl title.
