WASHINGTON – Today, the National Republican Congressional Committee announced their first round of ‘On the Radar’ candidates ahead of the 2014 elections. ‘On the Radar’ is the first level of the Committee’s ‘Young Guns’ program, and will help to provide candidates and their campaigns the tools they need to run successful, winning campaigns against their Democratic opponents.
“These 36 candidates all provide a stark contrast to their liberal opponents, whose support of ObamaCare and this Administration’s big-government, job-destroying agenda has taken a toll on the American people,” said NRCC Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR). “With ObamaCare’s bad policies and botched rollout affecting families across our nation, and our country diving deeper into debt each and every day, it’s time to bring real change backed by conservative principles and priorities to Washington. I am confident that these candidates will continue to work hard for their communities and their campaigns as we head into the 2014 election year.”
Of particular note are former House members Bob Dold (R-IL), Bobby Schilling (R-IL), Frank Guinta (R-NH) and Nan Hayworth (R-NY), who have each launched re-election campaigns in an effort to win back their respective seats.
Originally founded in the 2007-2008 election cycle by Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Majority Whip Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Budget Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), the Young Guns program supports and mentors challenger and open-seat candidates in races across the country. Officially an NRCC effort for the past 2 election cycles, the program requires its candidates to work towards specific goals and meet benchmarks throughout the year to ensure their continued participation in the program. In the 2012 election cycle, the program helped to elect 35 new Republican Members to the 113th Congress.
‘On the Radar’ is the first of three levels in the ‘Young Guns’ program. As participants in this program, these candidates will continue to work with the Committee and the program’s original founders to ensure that their campaigns remain competitive, well-funded and communicative within their districts.
