New Senate Report: Benghazi Attack Was “Preventable,” Attackers Tied To Al-Qaeda

January 15, 2014

A new report from the Senate Intelligence Committee is shedding new light on the attack on our diplomatic compound in Benghazi that left four Americans–including Ambassador Chris Stevens–dead.

The report confirmed that there was no protest in Benghazi before the attacks, contrary to many Democrats (including the White House) who claimed the protests sprung out of a video. The blame for the attack, according to the committee, lies at the feet of several individuals with ties to al-Qaeda-linked groups.

In terms of next steps, the report said the attacks were “preventable” and blamed the Obama Administration for failing to bring those responsible to justice. It also talked about previous warnings from the area, including a cable from Ambassador Stevens himself.

Via FOX News:

“Specifically, the report said the intelligence community provided ‘ample strategic warning’ that security in eastern Libya was deteriorating and U.S. personnel ‘were at risk.’ The report said multiple ‘tripwires’ were crossed signaling security problems, and the State Department should have increased its security posture in response. This included an Aug. 16, 2012, cable from Ambassador Chris Stevens raising security concerns, and prior attacks on westerners in Benghazi.”
