Third Democrat In Three Days Bails Out Ahead Of 2014 Elections

January 15, 2014

This is becoming a daily event.

Yet another House Democrat has announced their retirement this week—the third in three days.

Jim Moran, the longtime Virginia liberal, called it quits today after serving in Congress for 23 years.

Yesterday, vulnerable incumbent Bill Owens stepped aside, while Monday top Pelosi deputy George Miller announced plans to forgo reelection.

While Moran and Miller’s seats are strongly Democratic, Owens’s liberal record did not match his swing district.

Regardless of the makeup of the seats, these decisions still speak volumes about how Democrats view their chances to take back the House in 2014.

For Bill Owens, the choice was clear: leave the House or lose an election. After years of fending-off strong GOP candidates by the skin of his teeth, it was only a matter of time until his record caught up with him.

However for Moran and Miller, the decision is much more calculating…and telling. Both of them were senior legislators and spent a considerable amount of time in a Democrat House majority.

By choosing to exit rather than stick around, they clearly believe Democrats have little chance to take back the House in 2014.

If they realistically believed they had a shot, they would run again with the hopes of becoming one of Speaker Pelosi’s main deputies again and the privileged status that comes with it.

By bailing out, the message is clear: Republicans are in a strong position to grow our majority.

But we can’t rest yet. Election Day is 10 months away and Nancy Pelosi, President Obama, and their special interest friends will stop at nothing to return to power. They want to go back to the good old days of the stimulus, cap-and trade, and ObamaCare. We can’t let them turn back the clock.
