Longtime Liberal and Pelosi Ally, Henry Waxman, Is Retiring

January 30, 2014

Yet another Pelosi ally is calling it quits.

Henry Waxman, longtime California liberal and architect of both ObamaCare and cap-and-trade, is retiring after over 30 years in Congress.

What’s most notable about this retirement is that Waxman is the Ranking Member on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. If Democrats had won back the majority, Waxman would be chairman again–with vast power in a Pelosi-run House.

By retiring, he is sending a strong signal that Democrats simply don’t believe they can win back the House in 2014.

This comes on the heels of several reports that seem to confirm that very same thing. Last night, Politico’s Alex Isenstadt detailed how many Democrats are conceding the majority to Republicans and working to save the Senate at all costs.

Just yesterday, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz wouldn’t “confidently predict” they’d win the House.

Even the leader of the DCCC, Steve Israel, has lowered expectations.

In what’s been a disastrous week for Democrats’ hopes to win back the House, it’s just keeps getting worse.
