Labor Unions Announce They May Abandon Democrats in 2014 Because of ObamaCare

February 3, 2014

Just last week, Union leaders wrote an angry letter to Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Harry Reid stressing their grievances with ObamaCare. It turns out, union workers weren’t able to keep their plan if they liked it, contrary to President Obama’s repeated promises.

Unions have continued to lobby for special fixes to their ObamaCare woes, but so far they feel their concerns have largely fallen on deaf ears.

Now officials are saying that many unions may abandon their support for Democrat candidates in the 2014 midterm elections.  Unions are typically a loyal voting base for Democrats and have historically poured big dollars into races across the country and donated their time to Democrat causes.

That unions, of all groups, are considering withholding their support for Democrats perfectly illustrates the undeniable link between Democrat Congressional candidates and ObamaCare. Party leaders insist that Democrats will run on ObamaCare in November, but if their union friends have any influence on the 2014 midterm elections, they had better find a different strategy.

From Washington Post:

Labor leaders who have spent months lobbying unsuccessfully for special protections under the Affordable Care Act warned this week that the White House’s continued refusal to help is dampening union support for Democratic candidates in this year’s midterm elections.

Leaders of two major unions, including the first to endorse Obama in 2008, said they have been betrayed by an administration that wooed their support for the 2009 legislation with promises to later address the peculiar needs of union-negotiated insurance plans that cover millions of workers.

….

Union officials expect the health-care controversy to intensify a raging debate within the labor movement over how deeply labor should invest in Democratic Party candidates.
