Democrat Civil War Escalates as Sanders Targets Wasserman Schultz

The Democrat civil war escalated yesterday as Bernie Sanders endorsed and sent a fundraising email on behalf of Tim Canova, the far-left primary opponent to DNC Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz in Florida’s 23rd Congressional District. Canova has already been proven a formidable fundraiser in his own right, having raised over $1 million since entering the race in January.

Canova is just the latest candidate that Sanders has endorsed and provided fundraising help to in races against Democrat establishment candidates. Last month, a Sanders fundraising pitch helped NV-04 candidate Lucy Flores raise over $428,000 in just two weeks in her primary against Harry Reid’s anointed candidate, Ruben Kihuen. Sanders has also sent out fundraising pitches on behalf of liberal activists Zephyr Teachout in New York and Pramila Jayapal in Washington, both of whom are in the midst of competitive primaries against establishment candidates.

As the Democrat presidential primary comes to a close, Sanders is refusing to go away quietly and leave the party to Hillary Clinton. By targeting Wasserman Schultz, Sanders is signaling to national Democrats that he is willing to use his formidable fundraising machine against any Democrat who opposes his socialist vision. Sanders is now in an all-out war with the Democrat establishment, who cannot afford to lose his supporters in November. As in-fighting between Clinton and Sanders supporters escalates, and their presidential primary heads toward a bitter contested primary, House Democrats are left watching in horror as their prospects of picking up a significant number of seats in November vanish.

NRCC Comment: “By targeting DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz in her House primary, socialist Senator Bernie Sanders is making clear that his fight is not just with unpopular FBI target Hillary Clinton, it is with the entire Democrat establishment. As Sanders boosts far-left candidates who share his socialist vision of higher taxes and bigger government, he is forcing Democrats to move even further to the left and out of the political mainstream, rendering their candidates unelectable in competitive districts across the country.” – Bob Salera, NRCC Spokesman
