FACT CHECK: New Rick Nolan ad lies about his record on ISIS

August 15, 2016

Nolan ISISIn his new ad, Rick Nolan makes the laughable claim that he has fought for a “tough and smart strategy against ISIS” despite virtually every vote he’s taken on national security issues pointing to a different, dangerous conclusion. Here is Rick Nolan’s real record on ISIS:

  • Rick Nolan OFFERED an amendment to cut off funding to support, train, and equip our allies in the Iraqi military and Kurdish forces in the fight against ISIS.
  • Nolan voted for the unilateral withdrawal of U.S. forces from the fight against ISIS, halting all U.S. strikes against the terrorist group in Iraq and Syria, and removing the approximately 3,500 U.S. trainers from Iraq, denying the Iraqi armed forces and the Kurdish peshmerga critical support in their fight against this brutal terrorist group.
  • Nolan voted to limit the ability of U.S. commanders to pursue and target ISIS, the Taliban, and the Haqqani Network in Afghanistan and to train Afghan security forces to combat terrorist groups within their own country.
  • Nolan has repeatedly voted against the National Defense Authorization Act, the bill that authorizes funding for our troops and equips our military.
  • Nolan voted against authorizing funding for our intelligence agencies that are critical in our efforts to take the fight to ISIS overseas and prevent terror attacks at home.

NRCC Comment: “As the United States continues to face grave threats from ISIS at home and abroad, Rick Nolan is desperately trying to run from his dangerously weak record on national security issues. 8th District voters deserve better than someone who puts their safety at risk and then lies about it during election season for political gain.” – NRCC spokesman Zach Hunter
