Brad Ashford and his campaign manager contradict each other on GITMO vote

September 16, 2016

ne02-speakIf it wasn’t already obvious, career politician Brad Ashford is desperately scrambling to hide his support for closing GITMO. After being called out on his sudden change of heart, Ashford and his campaign manager offer conflicting explanations for the change to the Omaha World-Herald.

Ashford himself acknowledged the departure from his previous positions, saying his thinking had “evolved” over time.

Ashford’s campaign manager tried to square the circle by saying Ashford opposed previous measures to prevent the closure of GITMO because they went too far. However, yesterday’s measure that Ashford supported is one of the broadest measures brought up for a vote and far more comprehensive than the previous bills he opposed. This explanation is simply false.

Ashford says he changed his position. His campaign manager says he didn’t, while also being factually inaccurate on the legislation. Which is it?

NRCC Comment: “As career politician Brad Ashford scrambles to explain away his support for closing GITMO, he and his campaign simply can’t keep their stories straight. It couldn’t be more clear that Ashford is wrong on vital national security issues, but luckily 2nd District families can turn to Brigadier General Don Bacon for experienced and steady leadership to keep our nation safe.” – NRCC Spokesman Zach Hunter
