Divided they fall
Can the Democrats just be honest with themselves? What does it say about a party when their top candidates and all their hopes of winning the majority are pinned on disavowing the party leader and everything she stands for?
Forget about unity, the star recruits of Nancy Pelosi’s party are literally promising to vote against her for Speaker. Don’t just take our word for it:
“Conor Lamb was just the beginning. In the wake of Lamb’s upset victory in the Pennsylvania special election earlier in March, a slew of House Democratic challengers are refusing to say that they will vote for Rep. Nancy Pelosi for House Speaker if they are elected to Congress. NBC’s Alex Seitz-Wald and Jon Allen found more than a dozen candidates who won’t back her — and even more who are ducking the question. That’s a big problem for Washington Democrats’ hopes of winning the House majority in the 2018 midterms.”
We can’t say we blame Democrats for trying to shed themselves of Nancy Pelosi’s toxicity, as being tied to her is essentially the electoral kiss of death. But what do Democrats stand for if they can’t stand by their own party leader?
As Abraham Lincoln famously said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” For the 2018 Democratic Party, ‘divided’ is an understatement.
