The North Carolina Republican Party is calling on Democrat congressional candidate Dan McCready “to answer tough questions” about solar investments by a company he co-owns that are under fire for jobs allegedly lost to China and U.S. exposure to national security threats; a company he now denies investing in.

“Per usual, it’s ‘rules for thee but not for me’ when it comes to Dan McCready,” a North Carolina GOP party spokesman told North Carolina Business Daily. “McCready thinks his statements about the ‘Green New Deal’ or ‘Medicare For All’ absolves him of having to answer tough questions. He’s wrong and should immediately explain why he supports outsourcing American jobs to China.”

McCready’s would-be congressional constituents deserve those answers and a congressional representative who will answer them in the race between Republican North Carolina state Sen. Dan Bishop (R-Raleigh) and McCready, the party spokesman said.

“The voters of the 9th Congressional District deserve a Congressman with conviction, and they’ll get that with Sen. Dan Bishop, not Dan McCready,” the spokesman said.

Bishop, who has represented his south-central Mecklenburg County district since 2017, is facing off against business executive McCready in September’s special election for the 9th Congressional District seat.

McCready has been backing away from his investment history in Strata Solar, despite months of campaign claims that he helped Strata Solar build solar farms in North Carolina while, at the same time, promising he’ll “get tough with China.”

In May, Fox News reported that Strata Solar works with embattled Chinese technology company Huawei, which has been accused of posing a national security risk to the U.S. Strata allegedly outsourced production to China and imported devices from Huawei, according to the Fox News report.

As the scandal intensified, McCready told University of North Carolina’s fact checking service MediaHub that he blamed “dark money special interest allies” afraid of his “experience as a businessman” for “spreading outright lies.”

“My company invests in solar farms, we do not build them,” McCready said in his statement to MediaHub. “We play no role in engineering, design, or equipment selection. To be very clear, we never invested in Strata Solar, we never outsourced a single job, and there is no Huawei equipment in our solar farms.”

Earlier this month, McCready’s attorney also claimed that Double Time Capital, of which McCready is co-founder and Managing Partner, “has not invested in and owns no part of Strata Solar.”

However, McCready also cut a TV ad that featured a Strata Solar farm and the farm’s employees, and took down an interview in which he said “much” of his $80 million solar investments were with Strata Solar and posed for photos in front of Strata-made solar panels.

“Double Time has invested money in solar developed only by N.C.-based companies,” the taken-down 2017 Charlotte Business Journal article, now available only in its webcached version, said. “Much of that has been invested in projects by Strata Solar, the state’s largest solar company and a pioneer in developing the utility-scale solar that rocketed North Carolinas to second place in the nation for installed solar over the last four years or so.”
