The National Republican Congressional Committee raised $140 million last year on the strength of a 115% increase in contributions from online donors compared to 2019, according to a memorandum shared with the Washington Examiner.
The NRCC collected $17.9 million in December and closed 2021 with $78.2 million to spend on midterm elections. House Republicans are targeting dozens of seats in their bid to flip the five-seat Democratic majority and install Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy as speaker. The memo from the House GOP campaign arm, detailing a spike in digital fundraising compared to the previous off year (the year before the election year) suggests they are certain to have the resources.
“The NRCC’s online fundraising outlook for 2022 is bright,” the committee’s memo declares.
Democratic Party entities, including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, for years enjoyed an advantage in digital fundraising over their Republican counterparts.
But Republicans in recent years have begun to narrow the gap, investing more money in online fundraising and digital fundraising tools. That includes the establishment in the 2020 election cycle of WinRed, an online conduit for donations that operates similarly to the digital Democratic platform, ActBlue, around since the early 2000s.
The NRCC credits the improvement on its end, at least in part, to Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the committee chairman. This cycle, Emmer directed the NRCC to focus fundraising efforts on the online space, with the goal of boosting digital giving significantly. In the memo, the NRCC boasted that the strategy paid dividends.
The NRCC grew online gross revenue by 115% in 2021 compared to 2019.
- The NRCC raised more than $48.5 million in 2021, a $26 million increase over what it raised in 2019.
- The NRCC recorded its “lowest ever” cost of fundraising, enabling the committee to increase net receipts by 121%, equivalent to $16.3 million.
- The NRCC saw a 62% increase in contributions from existing donors and a 183% increase in total donations compared to 2019.
- The NRCC finished 2021 with $78.2 million in cash on hand, a 146% jump over how much cash it had banked by the end of 2019.
Meanwhile, NRCC fundraising was bolstered by transfers of $25.3 million from McCarthy, $12.4 million from House Minority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, $1.4 million from House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik of New York, and $10 million from the Republican National Committee.
