Local NY Dems say Sean Patrick Maloney has always been a jerk

June 6, 2022

If Sean Patrick Maloney thought running in NY-17 would be easier than NY-18, he was wrong.

The American Prospect and New York Focus report that on top of angering his Democrat colleagues with his move, the knives are out for Maloney back home as “local politicians in Maloney’s region say…his willingness to sabotage fellow Democrats is familiar.”

Here’s what they’re saying:

Maloney’s progressive primary challenger State Sen. Alessandra Biaggi: “Maloney cares more about short-term wins and holding on to his power than strengthening the Democratic Party.”

Former Dutchess County Democratic Committee Chairman Joe Ruggiero: “He hasn’t done anything to build the party or the infrastructure behind it. Locally, he’s all about himself.”

Former Chairwoman of the Dutchess County Democratic Committee Elisa Sumner on Maloney’s initial bid for NY-18: “We begged him not to run in the district.” Maloney “intimated that he wanted to be in this district because it was closer to the New York City media market.”

Former Poughkeepsie mayoral candidate Randy Johnson on Maloney “frequently [declining] to endorse Black candidates”: “He really did a disservice to the Democratic party in the city.”
