WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — We sat down with NRCC Chair Richard Hudson today to hear his thoughts on how House Republicans can preserve their majority in November. We’ll have much more from the interview tomorrow morning, but here’s a sneak peek of what Hudson told us about IVF.

When discussing his view that most Republicans support the fertility treatment, Hudson told us he and his wife used IVF to have a child. It’s a prominent reminder that many families — no matter their political ideology — rely on the process to conceive.

After the Alabama Supreme Court restricted access to the widely used fertility treatment last month, Republicans have scrambled to assure voters they support IVF. But Democrats are highly suspicious and argue that the party’s anti-abortion legislation would risk IVF access thanks to restrictive definitions of personhood.

“Democrats are lying about our position,” Hudson said. “They’re exploiting that pain for political gain. What the Democrats are basically saying is we support life in a petri dish, but if you insert it in a womb, you can kill it.”

“I’m just telling my candidates and members: ‘Talk about what you believe. Don’t let them define you,’” Hudson said.
