On August 14th at the corner of Bellevue Highway and Brookfield Road, U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett, R-Michigan, toured an active county road project in his district, speaking with crews and riding on both a paver and a steam roller during the visit.
The Eaton County visit was coordinated with both the Michigan Asphalt Pavement Association and the National Asphalt Pavement Association, whose representatives joined Barrett on site. Leaders from both organizations spoke with the congressman and the road crews, highlighting the local impact of federal transportation funding and the importance of showing policymakers firsthand how road projects are built and maintained.

Barrett, who serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said the crews he met were enthusiastic about a new federal policy that removes income tax from overtime pay.
“They’re thrilled about the no tax on overtime,” Barrett said. “Many of them work overtime. This is seasonal work, of course, they’re not paving roads in the middle of winter, so they really like that they’re not going to have to pay taxes on the overtime they’re working right now.”
While speaking with the workers, Barrett highlighted the essential role road construction plays in keeping the state and country functioning. He also stressed the need for greater safety measures to protect crews from passing traffic, saying such protections are vital to preserving their safety and human dignity.
Mitch Baldwin, director of government affairs for NAPA, said Barrett’s visit showed him the local impact of federal policy decisions.
