ICYMI: McDonald Rivet’s Shutdown Puts Partisan Politics Ahead of Michiganders

October 30, 2025

A new report is highlighting out of touch Democrat Kristen McDonald Rivet’s vote to shut down the government.

“Kristen McDonald Rivet and the Democrats shut down the government, leaving Michiganders working without pay, families without food assistance, and veterans without benefits. McDonald Rivet and her party must end the shutdown and let Congress get back to work to deliver commonsense solutions for Michigan families.” – NRCC spokesman Zach Bannon

On September 19th, the House passed H.R. 5371, The Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2026 to fund the federal government. The continuing resolution would have extended government funding until November 21.

McDonald Rivet voted against the resolution, essentially supporting the current government shutdown. The bill passed the House 217- 212, but has been stymied by U.S. Senate Democrats. On Tuesday, they successfully voted to block the bill from passing for the 13th time in a 54-45 vote, with 60 votes the threshold to pass the CR.

Flint resident Amir Hassan is seeking the Republican nomination to oppose McDonald Rivet in Michigan’s 8th district. He noted that, outside of districts covering Detroit, MI-08 actually has the most snap-receiving households of any congressional district in the state, citing the USDA’s latest 2023 data.

“Kristin McDonald-Rivet is playing politics with people’s lives,” Hassan texted The Midwesterner. “By voting against government funding for ‘leverage’ as her leaders have admitted, she’s taking food off of people’s tables. Kristin McDonald-Rivet might be able to afford to live without a paycheck but federal law enforcement officers can’t nor can working families who depend on government benefits. It’s shameful.”

In an email to The Midwesterner, NRCC Spokesman Zach Bannon agreed with Hassan.
“Kristen McDonald Rivet and the Democrats shut down the government, leaving Michiganders working without pay, families without food assistance, and veterans without benefits. McDonald Rivet and her party must end the shutdown and let Congress get back to work to deliver commonsense solutions for Michigan families,” Bannon said.

In a previous statement, Bannon noted: “Out of touch Democrat Kristen McDonald Rivet is grinding America to a halt. McDonald Rivet’s shutdown puts critical programs that Michiganders rely on at risk, just so she can prioritize open borders and handouts for illegal immigrants. Voters won’t forgive this betrayal.”
