The U.S. Department of Energy says a newly finalized $1.6 billion loan to utility company DTE will save Michigan customers more than $700 million over the next three decades, courtesy of the One Big Beautiful Bill passed by Congress last year.

The federal announcement has highlighted political contrasts in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District race as Democratic candidate Michigan state Sen. Sean McCann, D-Kalamazoo, continues calling for repeal of the Trump-backed One Big Beautiful Bill.

McCann has previously said repealing the One Big Beautiful Bill would be among his top priorities if elected to Congress. His opponent, incumbent Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland, argues repealing the law could jeopardize energy initiatives Republicans credit with lowering costs for Michigan families.
