NRCC Statement on MI-08

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) released the following statement on Michigan’s 8th Congressional District primary election: 

“Out of touch Democrat Kristen McDonald Rivet is a self-serving, partisan liberal who attacks law enforcement, emboldens China, and continually rejects common sense efforts to lower taxes. McDonald Rivet has failed Michiganders and they will send her packing this fall when they elect commonsense conservative Thomas Smith.” – NRCC Spokesman Zach Bannon

BACKGROUND

• MI-08 has seen a shift to the right over the past several election cycles:
  • In terms of vote share, President Trump grew his share by nearly 3.5 points from 2016 to 2024.
  • At the Senate level, the district shifted right in each election since 2018:
    • Shifted 3.7 points to the right from 2018 to 2020
    • Shifted 2.7 points to the right from 2020 to 2024
    • Shifted 6.4 points to the right from 2018 to 2024
