A Gerrymander. $7.5 Million. Marni von Wilpert is Still Sweating.

October 23, 2026

Democrats redrew California’s 48th District, dragging it a whopping 19 points to the left. More than $7.5 million in attacks later, Republican Jim Desmond remains within striking distance.

New polling shows Desmond within the margin of error, leading in his San Diego County home base, and outperforming the generic Republican ballot by five points.

Earlier polling also showed a close race. A Democrat internal poll had von Wilpert ahead by just 2 points, within its 4.4-point margin of error. September’s SurveyUSA poll similarly showed a narrow 3-point lead, within its 5.2-point margin of error.

“Democrats can’t sell Marni von Wilpert’s disastrous record, and they can’t spend enough to bury it. Their candidate is a dud, their arrogance is expensive, and Jim Desmond will turn Gavin Newsom’s prized gerrymander into a national embarrassment.” – NRCC Spokesman Christian Martinez
