New NRCC Ad: Lazy & Out Of Touch Adam Gray Raised The Gas Tax On The Central Valley

July 1, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) released a new English and Spanish paid advertising campaign attacking lazy Adam Gray for voting to raise California’s gas tax and then failing to show up when he had the chance to suspend it.

Every time Central Valley families fill up their tanks, they are paying the price for Adam Gray’s self-serving Sacramento record. Gray voted to raise the gas tax, sat on his hands while costs crushed working families, and now the Adam Gray gas tax is set to rise again to 63 cents per gallon on July 1.

“Lazy Adam Gray took more than $1 million from taxpayers, skipped hundreds of votes, and still found time to make gas more expensive for Central Valley families. Gray is the worst kind of career politician: absent when families need relief, present when it’s time to raise taxes, and always first in line for a taxpayer-funded paycheck.” – NRCC Spokesman Christian Martinez

On background:

  • Adam Gray voted for the 2017 Gas Tax and said he was “proud to have been a part of that effort” to pass SB1.
  • Gray has missed several opportunities to suspend the gas tax:
    • Facing historic high gas prices, in March 2022, Gray did not vote on AB 1638, which would have suspended the gas tax for six months and saved drivers 50 cents per gallon.
    • Later in March 2022, Gray did not vote when considering legislation to bring a gas tax suspension to the floor. According to the Assembly’s Daily Journal, Gray was present for votes that day.
    • In April 2022, Gray did not vote on striking AB 1638, which would have suspended the gas tax for six months and saved drivers 50 cents per gallon.
    • In May 2022, Gray initially did not vote on an effort to bring AB 2457 to the floor.
  • Between April 2013 and January 2022, Gray missed 157 votes and was present for more than 80 percent of the days on which those votes occurred.
  • Since 2013, Gray has received over $1 million in taxpayer salary.
