Primary after primary, House Dems’ path to the majority evaporates

Tonight’s primary result in MI-07 is the latest humiliation for the DCCC and national Democrats, who spent months desperately trying to stop Democratic Socialists of America member William Lawrence because they knew that if he became the nominee in one of the nation’s most competitive districts, their chances of flipping the seat would immediately collapse.

Just look at what Democrats themselves said about the prospect of Lawrence becoming the nominee:

Rep. Hillary Scholten: “Lawrence’s past comments ‘speak to a broader lack of judgment, temperament, and leadership that would leave him ill-equipped to lead in Congress. In short, he can’t win.‘”
Rep. Brad Schneider: “We have a great chance to win the seat if we get the candidate that can win the seat. Will Lawrence is not that candidate.“
Democrat operative to POLITICO: “If he wins, we’re done.“
Third Way Executive Vice President: “At stake is a winnable swing House seat, and what we really worry about in this race … is unlike the ‘commie corridor’ in New York City, it really matters who wins this primary.”
New Politics CEO: “People aren’t coalescing to say, ‘This is going to be the candidate because, mission first, we gotta win.’ That’s not happening.”
Democrat operative Joe Disano: “We’re going to lose races we wouldn’t lose otherwise.”
Democrat operative to NOTUS: “It’s an insane thing to say about what should be a top-5 pickup opportunity this year, but I think we might be about to shoot ourselves in the head on this one.“
Punchbowl News: “Many Democrats believe Lawrence is too far left to flip a purple seat.“
Axios: “Centrist Democrats agree that Lawrence should not be the nominee for a key swing seat, pointing to his left-wing positions and his comments in 2024 that Black Democratic leaders ‘defang the white left.'”
NOTUS: “Democratic strategists in Michigan and Washington are deeply worried that the party is on the verge of nominating William Lawrence… Doing so, they fear, would be an electoral disaster in a swing district.”

And he’s even too far left for AOC, who refused to mention Lawrence in her remarks in Michigan and ran offstage to avoid a photo op with him.

MI-07 is just the latest chapter in a pattern that’s playing out across the country. National Democrats keep trying to block their party’s radical socialist wing, only to waste millions, deepen party infighting, and end up with unelectable nominees in must-win districts. Just ask the DCCC about Arizona, California, Colorado, and Maine.
