Weirdo Democrat Darren Soto voted to make life more expensive for nearly 50,000 of his constituents, a new report found.

Instead of empowering families and the tourism, hospitality, and entertainment industries that drive Central Florida’s economy, Soto voted against Republicans’ landmark tax legislation, voting to hike taxes by 22% and against eliminating taxes on tips and overtime.

This vote is a massive liability for Soto, as he’s now running in a district President Trump carried by nearly 18%.

Representative Darren Soto voted to make life more expensive for workers, and the new congressional district makes his voting record a greater political liability in his reelection campaign. The Central Florida seat is a target for Republicans and Democrats.

In his old district, perhaps Rep. Soto felt safe enough to simply vote the Democratic Party line, but in the newly drawn district the numbers shifted. The real bad news for Rep. Darren Soto is that he is now running in a Florida district that President Donald Trump carried by 17.8% in 2024. His votes will now come under new scrutiny, and they will carry a greater political liability for his reelection.

The tourism, hospitality, and entertainment industries drive Central Florida’s economy. In Osceola County alone, 40,700 jobs, or 35% of the workforce, are supported by the tourism industry.

The industry generates: $7 billion in visitor spending, $10.6 billion in total economic impact, $2.3 billion in wages and compensation, and $685.3 million in state and local tax revenue. In Indian River County, which Soto gained after redistricting, the Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation industry and the Accommodations and Food Service industry account for 8,405 jobs, or nearly 20% of the county’s total workforce.

The National Republican Congressional Committee said instead of voting to make life more affordable in Central Florida:

• Rep. Soto voted against eliminating taxes on tips and overtime, which boosts take-home pay for tipped workers by $1,300 and overtime workers by $1,400.
• Rep. Soto voted against ending taxes on social security, which benefits 4.8 million seniors across the state.
• Rep. Soto voted to raise taxes by 22% and cut the child tax credit in half.

The NRCC says that Rep. Darren Soto voted to make life more expensive for nearly 50,000 workers in his new district, in an election year where every vote matters.

“Radical Democrat Darren Soto had the chance to deliver much-needed tax relief and help his constituents put more money back in their wallets and empower Central Florida’s workforce,” said NRCC Spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole. “Instead, he tried to siphon away more of their hard-earned money while he sits pretty and collects a salary off their backs.”

Democrat Darren Soto’s campaign may be stalling, and some critics even say it is “on life support.” Rep. Soto’s FEC filing shows that he spent $82,000 more than his campaign brought in, the NRCC noted while saying Soto’s unpopularity is not surprising given how he has voted and what he has supported.
