Sarah Trone Garriott Treats Iowans as a Piggy Bank

September 18, 2026

A new report exposes Sarah Trone Garriott’s record on taxes and spending. Sarah Trone Garriott has voted against tax relief for Iowans repeatedly, but has absolutely no problem using their money as a slush fund for her radical priorities.

Her record includes:

  • Voting against the largest tax cut in Iowa history
  • Endorsing and donating to radical Kimberly Graham, who wants to implement a progressive income tax and a progressive Death tax
  • Criticizing the Working Families Tax Cuts, which put an extra $1,588 in Iowa families’ pockets

Meanwhile, Sarah Trone Garriott has voted to spend taxpayer dollars on handouts for illegals and taxpayer-funded gender mutilation surgeries.

Trone Garriott says no to your tax cut, yes to everyone else’s handout

Sarah Trone Garriott wants you to believe she’s fighting for working Iowans. Her voting record says otherwise — unless “working Iowans” means illegal immigrants on public assistance and taxpayer-funded gender reassignment surgeries. For actual Iowa families trying to keep more of their own paycheck? She’s voted no three times since 2022.

She killed the largest tax cut in Iowa history — and got caught doing it. In February 2022, Trone Garriott voted against the bill that flattened Iowa’s income tax to 3.9%, exempted retirees’ 401(k)s, pensions, and IRAs from state taxes, and slashed corporate tax rates. This wasn’t a modest adjustment — it was the biggest tax relief package in state history, and she stood in the way of it.

Her record isn’t just votes — it’s money. Trone Garriott put her name and her checkbook behind Kimberly Graham, a candidate who previously ran on repealing Iowa’s tax cuts, importing a progressive income tax, and slapping Iowa family farms with a progressive death tax. Trone Garriott endorsed her and donated to her campaign. That’s not a stray vote she can explain away in a mailer — that’s a candidate she chose to fund.

Then came the Working Families Tax Cuts — and Trone Garriott showed her true colors again. She trashed the legislation as “this big, awful bill,” going after Rep. Zach Nunn for supporting it, and falsely claimed it would “make life more expensive for hardworking Iowans and their families.” Here’s what she conveniently left out: the bill protected IA-03 families from a 23% tax hike — nearly $1,588 a year, or roughly eight weeks of groceries for a family already squeezed by inflation. Trone Garriott wasn’t protecting Iowans from a bad bill. She was rooting for the tax hike.

Trone Garriott voted against protecting SNAP and WIC — taxpayer-funded programs — from being exploited by illegal immigrants. She voted to allow taxpayer dollars to fund gender reassignment surgeries. And she voted against commonsense work requirements for Iowa’s expanded Medicaid program — the bare minimum accountability taxpayers should expect from a welfare program they’re funding.

“Sarah Trone Garriott treats Iowans like a piggy bank for her radical agenda. She voted against historic tax cuts for Iowans while backing taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants and gender mutilation surgeries. Sarah Trone Garriott doesn’t want Iowans to keep more of their money; she wants more of it to spend.” — NRCC Spokeswoman Emily Tuttle
