After nearly 20 years in Congress, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor has turned a modest personal fortune into a multimillion-dollar pile, selling stock on the eve of the COVID market crash, failing to disclose trades on time and maintaining household investments in funds with exposure to companies in communist China, all while voting to raise taxes on the Tampa Bay families she was sent to represent.

When Castor arrived in Washington in 2007, her financial disclosure showed she was worth at least $803,039. She is now worth between $7.2 million and $22.5 million. Independent trackers have put the figure even higher in 2026.
The path is not hard to follow.
In February 2020, members of Congress were briefed on the coronavirus outbreak. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. On March 10, the day before that declaration, Castor dumped between $32,004 and $130,000 in stock.
She sold $15,001 to $50,000 of Berkshire Hathaway, which closed at $202.73 a share that day and had already fallen to $175.97 two days later. Her Franklin Templeton stock closed at $20.15 on March 10 and dropped to $16.76 two days later. Joint-account records also show March 10 sales in Bank of America, Blackstone and other holdings.

Castor has not always disclosed those dealings on time. In 2021, she was caught violating federal law for failing to report stock purchases within the 45-day window required by the STOCK Act. An ethics watchdog called for an investigation after she waited more than a year to disclose tens of thousands of dollars in Berkshire Hathaway buys from June and July 2020. Those trades were not filed until July 27, 2021.
While her household’s wealth increased substantially, Castor repeatedly voted to raise taxes and support legislation that opponents argued would increase costs for taxpayers.
“During her nearly 20-year career in Congress, Corrupt Kathy Castor has delivered for exactly one Tampa family: Her own,” NRCC spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole told Florida’s Voice. “Castor’s wealth has ballooned thanks to her prolific, and even illegal, stock trading. And while she’s lined her pockets, she’s tried to hike taxes on her own constituents. Voters sent Castor to Congress to work for them; she enriched herself instead. That will come to an end in November.”
