NRCC Weekly Rundown: Dem Convention Chaos, Mike Derrick’s sexism, and more!

July 29, 2016

run-down

And here’s this week’s special Democratic National Convention edition of the NRCC Weekly Rundown:

National: The NRCC debuted a new digital ad this week targeted at convention-goers in Philadelphia. With House Democrats in universal support of Hillary Clinton, the ad looks back at the decades of lies and scandal that have defined Clinton’s career.

National: The Democratic National Convention got off to a great start this weekend as DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was forced to resign. To make matters worse, newly named Vice Presidential nominee Tim Kaine, in his 60 Minutes interview, broke from the party line and admitted that Republicans would remain in control of the House after November.

National: Democrats officially nominated Hillary Clinton for president this week, as her favorability continues to plunge. Since leaving the State Department in 2013, Clinton’s net favorability has plunged an astonishing 52%. Clinton is running as the candidate of the status quo, promising to continue all of President Obama’s unpopular failed policies.

National: In attempt to appease disaffected Bernie Sanders supporters, Democrats approved the most far-left platform in the party’s history. The platform includes calls for numerous tax hikes, endorses going even farther than Obamacare, and praises Obama’s job-killing decision to unilaterally block the Keystone XL pipeline.

CA-07: In the midst of his campaign finance scandal and accompanying FBI investigation, Ami Bera hightailed it to Philadelphia for Hillary Clinton’s coronation. Maybe while he’s there, Hillary can give him some pointers on beating a federal investigation!

MD-06: John Delaney has been having a ball in Philadelphia this week. Instead of focusing on his job in Congress, Delaney spent his week meeting hanging out with party leaders and outside groups, trying to gain support for his likely run for Governor in two years.

ME-02: The DNC email leak exposed the worries of Emily Cain’s campaign for her support of Hillary Clinton. Cain’s campaign staff was so worried about an NRCC email drawing attention to Clinton, who lost Maine’s caucuses by 30 points, that it was brought directly to the attention of the DNC’s communications director.

MI-08: With Melissa Gilbert expected to plead to be removed from the ballot due to being physically unable to deal with the demands of a congressional campaign, the NRCC looked at how Gilbert has been spending her time, including cutting up logs with a chainsaw.

MN-08: After Bernie Sanders won his district in a blowout in the Democratic primary, Rick Nolan promised voters he would support the socialist Senator at his party’s convention. But Nolan broke that promise this week as he decided against attending the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

NV-04: As most Democrats with competitive races ran for cover from Hillary Clinton, Ruben Kihuen went headlong into the eye of the storm. Kihuen actually took a speaking role at the convention, so that he could personally express his enthusiasm for the incredibly unpopular Clinton.

NY-03: As national polls show that 68% of voters do not find Hillary Clinton honest and trustworthy, Taxin’ Tom Suozzi headed to Philadelphia to serve as a delegate at the Democratic National Convention. While there, Suozzi and his fellow delegates voted to approve the party’s extreme far-left platform by voice vote.

NY-21: Mike Derrick shared a shockingly sexist letter to the editor on his Facebook page this week, calling Rep. Elise Stefanik an “errand girl” whose sole purpose in life was to get within “the cologne zone of dream date Paul Ryan.” Derrick refused to apologize for his chauvinistic post, but did think the DNC owed Bernie Sanders an apology for their comments on the Democratic presidential primary.

PA-08: Slippery Steve Santarsiero confirmed that he would be in Philadelphia for the Democratic National Convention. Since he was in town, the NRCC took the opportunity to ask if he supported the party’s tax-hiking platform.

Appleton’s Eminent Domain Story Shows Us the Real Tom Nelson

For starters it underlines Nelson’s governing philosophy. Not only does this move showcase him as a big government liberal, but as one who will put its needs before the needs of its citizenry. This moment also shows what kind of political operator Nelson is. If the statement issued last Friday by county board chairman, sheriff, and others after Nelson’s veto is true, he’s a liar at best and an opportunist at worst. READ

NNY lawmakers, education officials, oppose regulation that would punish districts for opt-out

According to Tom Flanagin, communications director for Rep. Elise M. Stefanik, R-Willsboro, the congresswoman opposes the new regulation forcing states to punish districts. “Opt out rates in the north country are high in large part due to the failed roll out of Common Core under the Commissioner King that has damaged local trust,” Mr. Flanagin said. “Congresswoman Stefanik has urged Secretary King to learn from and not repeat these mistakes.” READ
